Called the French and Indian War in the US, It was simply the North American Theatre in the Seven Year's War(the first true World War) which started in 1756.

The French and Indian War was the American phase of a world wide, nine-years' war (1754-1763) fought between France and Great Britain. It would determine the control of the vast colonial territory of North America.

The French and Indian War began over the specific issue of whether the upper Ohio River Valley was a part of the British Empire, and therefore open for trade and settlement by Virginians and Pennsylvanians, or part of the French Empire. Behind this issue loomed an infinitely larger one, however; which national culture was to dominate the heart of North America.

The fourth and Final Part of the French and Indian war , which became known as the seven year war. The French had colonies in Montreal and Louisiana. They tried to link them by taking control of the Ohio Valley. George Washington actually led a force of Virginians to fight in the Ohio Valley. He was defeated. The French actually did well at the beginning , but eventually were worn down and lost. The most famous battle of the war was probably the fall of Fort Ticonderoga in 1759. The French lost Montreal in 1760, which was essentially the end of the war and the French interest in North America. The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 which was the official end. As you know the French joined the Colonies during the War Of Independence, partly because of what had happened during the French Indian war.
