How to catch feral cats?

My friend has a barn cat that's feral (but warming up). She(the cat) had a litter and she can't catch them. She's (my friend) afraid they are going to start breeding. They are about 7 months old now. She's tried feeding them but they won't come to her. There's no animal control officer outside city limits. Any suggestions?

Only way is to get a Humane Cat Trap----medium sized trapping cage where you put food ,that has a smell cats like to attract them, when you raise and catch on the spring the door as the cat advances into the trap to get to the food goes past the spring which then shuts the door behind the cat and the cat is trapped in the cage but safe and not hurt. Since this is a feral cat and will be scared when you approach the cage best to have the cat carrier right there and elongate the cage so when you open the door only place for the cat to go is the carrier-do this with oven mitt ot heavy gloves and towel drape the towel around the cage wher the door is to block the cat's view to all except the carrier--she should do this with someone there so the door to the carrier can be closed quickly. if she intends to have them fixed-the best thing for they breed fast have her get $special rate for the large no of cats and then take as she catches. Naturally she can't be feeding them if she wants to trap them but can have water available to them just not food-for thats in the trap. Will take her days to accomplish trapping all and a lot of patience-sister did this recently-but when she traps a cat make sure does NOT get loose for it will take a long time for the cat to come back to the trap if she will at all. why the towel and dump from cage straight into the carrier.Invest in quality canned cat food for the stronger and better it smells the less time it'll take to entice the cats. Bless you and your friend for doing this for by fixing them she's probably saving lives and some of the cats being hungry starving ,not to mention that soon she 'll have a out of control situation for can breed approx 6-7mos.Can get a cage from Animal Control for approx $20,00 rental fee which she'll get back when she returns. They usually drop off the cage and then pick it back up-since they rent for limited no of days have her talk to a Supervisor(only on who can approve this) eplain why need cage and arrange for longer use.

At seven months, it's going to be just about impossible to domesticate those kittens. The best you can hope for is to trap them with a humane trap and take them to the shelter. The females are just about old enough to go into heat. That can happen anywhere from six to nine months of age.

I would double check with a local shelter to see if there is any agency in your area that does a trap/spay/release program for ferals. With an arrangement like this, the cat would be trapped, taken to a vet who would spay or neuter it, and then be returned to your friend who could then release it back to the barn.

Feral kittens can be made into housecats, but they have to be stolen from the nest when they are about a month old and then raised in a house with humans. It is a lot of work and expense to feed them properly at that age, but worth it to turn what would be a feral cat into a lap cat. If you get beyond six weeks, it takes a very experienced person to get that kitten to the point where it is a good human companion.

You need to purchase a "Live Trap" from your local AG supply store. They run about 35-40 bucks, and will catch anything from cats to raccoons, armadillos, opossums, just get the NEXT to the smallest size. Get one too big, kitties won't be heavy enough to trip the trigger, too small and the door will hit him on the butt and it won't shut so he can back out.

The Ag people will even show you how to bait it. (Best thing to do is put some cheap tuna UNDER the trap so they have to work at it to get it.) Kitty steps on this little lever in the bottom of the trap and a door shuts behind him. No injury and you can safely transport him to the shelter.

Source(s): I trap wild kitties and other kritters at my house either shelter them or release them in the country.

Get a live animal trap. Trap them and have them spayed and neutered. Put them back in the barn.

Breeding problem is solved and they will not have to be put down.

Use tuna or can food. Don't set out any other food for them. As they will not go in the cage with other food around.

provide the cat some days to be via itself interior the room with sparkling foodstuff and water - grant canned foodstuff and dry foodstuff. no remember if that's no longer eating after 2-3 days then catch it lower back and produce it to a veterinary scientific institution. confirm the room is gigantic adequate that it does not sense threatened once you enter. in case you have placed it in a small bathing room - each and every time the door opens - the cat would bounce and attempt to climb the partitions to smash out. this could cool down with time. The cat will probably in basic terms sit down and watch you from around the room, and that i desire to advise sitting in there with the cat and not attempting to ideas-set it for some days. Then carry the foodstuff and water nearer to the cat as selections. this would take some days to weeks. sure some cats continually stay feral - which potential traumatic of persons - yet they too are nonetheless stable pets. I also have a three year F - spayed feral cat residing in my domicile, She became residing off onion jewelry and scraps from a storage She LOVES my different cats, yet i won't puppy her or touch her. nonetheless, i will now sit down interior the comparable room together with her and we watch one yet another or she will sleep. She is now in basic terms beginning to beg for foodstuff from me - yet nonetheless does not enable me touch her. they are continually safer and could stay longer on your place then outdoors. with reference to the scratches - video show them for now. i does no longer attempt to ideas-set the cat till it tactics you (on your protection). quicker or later, i'd catch it lower back and produce it to a veterinary scientific institution for an examination, vaccines and spay/neuter.
