I know that in my area we have an organization called Altrusa. It's a woman's organization that is doing things for the community to help. Our group was gathering care packages to send over.
My suggestion is to ask local organizations in your area, churches, ywca's, woman's groups if they have any information for you such as, rules on what can be sent, what is needed and how to go about sending. I know that many churches and other organizations are already doing this so you should be successful if you search them out. Good luck.

These are the things my son who is a Marine has asked for: a comfortable pillow, snacks such as beef jerky and sunflower seeds, sugarless gum, DVD's that he watch on his laptop computer and music CD's. He always welcomes toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss.
I think that a nice idea for Christmas would be to send Christmas stockings filled with goodies.
And you definitely want to get things in the mail soon. My daughter sent Halloween Candy to my son's entire platoon weeks ago, but they still have not received it.
The other thing that my daughter does is to get greeting cards and have everyone she knows sign them thanking the guys and gals for their service. You could do that with Thanksgiving and Christmas cards. The personal notes are much appreciated
I know that whatever you do will help. Bless you for making the effort.

Last time my husband was there I sent Christmas stockings with candy and tied each one to Tupperware holding cookies and fudge. I had also put their names on each one, so that they knew it was for THEM not just anyone. They loved it. It really is simple inexpensive things that could only come from home that mean the most to them. And as mentioned below, you will need to get your package out by the week after Thanksgiving so it will arrive before Christmas.

Chapstick definitely. If they have a way to listen to music, and you know what styles they like most, make some mix cds. Favorite treats are always good too. Make sure that they're nothing that might spoil quickly, and try to get them individually wrapped (like those oreo snack packs). Entertainment magazines, like Rolling Stone, will keep 'em occupied when they're bored. Hope this helps!

What kind of things do your friends like that they might miss being over there? Candy, chips, cookies, brownies, gum, home made banana or pumpkin bread, books or magazines, deck of cards or anything else you can think of like that. I'm sure your friends would appreciate any little thing you can send.

If your friends are guys, they want cigarettes/chew, magazines(the ones with pics), movies/ video games(new releases), record DVDs with TV shows and include the commercials, shampoo, body wash, razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sewing kits, baby wipes. But most of all.....letters telling them your proud. Pen pal addresses of single gals. It's something to look forward to upon returning :)

when i go to send my care packages, i send food stuff seperate, after time of things mixed, food can start to taste like other stuff packed, so seperate food items. send fun things to brighten their day, like silly memoreis things for example if you and your friend had a rock fight in a lake blahblah, send a rock and write on i win last rock sent, or whatever lil stories you can think. my grandma told me a story she did. her brother in law wrote asking for underware to be sent. so her and her sister bought mens underware and tacked pink lace on everypair for some gigles. anyway send newspapers from thier hometowns, and comics or jokes, keep them smiling

The National Geographic is very nice. The boy loves it. Little Girl has had a chance to read it as well. The Boy took it to school right away! He had to show all his friends.
