Why when you put away an electric cord you find it all tangled up?

It never makes sense, then you have to waste like 10 mins untangling the crazies knots in the world.

To prevent the problem just wrap the cord back the way it was when you bought the appliance, leave enough of the plug end of the cord unwrapped to coil around the wrapped cord and then take the plug end and pull it through hole left between the coil wrap and wrapped cord. Problem solved, no more tangled cords. If it is an extension cord same principle, wrap, coil, and pull through. Saves a lot of hassle. As to why? Don't know they just get into a mess if not wrapped. Guess it's just moving things around in the area they are stored in. Hope this helps.

They get tangled because of the wires inside getting twisted in use. This twist does not do much when they are in use but once they are rolled up and put away it causes the cord to twist in on its self. A good example of this would be to take a 3 foot piece of rope lay it on a flat surface and twist the ends in opposite directions a little. On the flat surface it doesn't do much. Now pick the ends up with out letting the rope untwist and bring the ends together. The rope will now twist its self up.

I found the best way to keep an electrical cord from getting tangled in the first place is wind it around a coathanger and hang it up in your closet or wardrobe.

I use rubberbands on my cords.

But they sell detanglers to add to cords.
