By what means would one go about selling their delicious clam chowder to the public?

If that is all you wanted to sell, how would you get people to stop and buy it? I thought of one of those vendors stands, but I just dont know if that is all that convenient for customers. What makes this whole idea more appealing to the public? How would you go about it?

Update:

Would you stop for a bowl of clam chowder if you had a second and saw a little stand out in front of another estabishment. I mean, it wouldn't be cheesy or anything, I am curious how many people think that they would stop at times. What would catch their eye and make their mouth water for some?

Get a small concession stand that can be towed. Make sure it meets the Health Dept.'s standards and find a nice place to park it. Use bright attractive signage. People will stop.

  • Check with you local Health Department to see which hoops they want you to jump through.

Then, see if you can get a kiosk in your local mall. You'll have the benefit of knowing your stand is safely locked up each night, and you'll get lots of customers.

If you set up your kiosk in MY mall, I will surely drop by & take a few jars off your hands!

Damn...now I want clam chowder. And, my mall hasn't got any New England seaside painted kiosks offering the one true classic Amerian chowder

well there are some legal things you need to do first...get a patent or some papper from the court house giving you permission to sell it. then it would also have to be approved by the FADA or something...i think....depending on how big your business is going to be....then you have to have a place to sell it. then youll have to advertise. A lot of work and money to start even a small business. good luck. I really hope it works out for you.

    So, you gals get busy!

  • Well you've heard of a lemonade stand? Just sit in front of your house with a big pot of soup. By the way, is it Manhattan clam chowder or New England? I love New England clam chowder....

You didn't mention what country/state you live in. In the U.S., each state has their own requirements. I'm in the process of opening my own restaurant in Iowa. I'm required to have a food service license, pay the fee according to your projected annual gross sales, obtain a tax permit to collect sales tax and make payment to the state, and have your local health department inspect the premises where the food is to be prepared, to make sure that all health regulations are followed. Temperature of prepared food, and cleanliness are two major requirements.

I've been in the food service industry off and on for about 20 years and have a culinary degree. Alot of paperwork to get started, but I feel it's worth it if you're doing something you love.

    Good luck!!
