Amber ring around the moon?
I looked up at the moon tonight and saw an amber ring around it.There were cumulus clouds around it,I'm guessing itis the light of the moon reflecting off minerals in the clouds.I live near Albany NY if that helps with answer.Does anyone have a more precise answer.

You were close. It was ice crystals in the clouds refracting the light.

If there are fires in the area, the smoke or smog can also block the light reflecting from the moon. It's called a blood moon (I think...or a blood moon is from an eclipse...I can't recall), and the smoke reduces the spectrum that reaches us down to the red spectrum of light. If it's a ring around the moon, that's crystals reflecting the light. Cool to look at!

Atmospheric refraction... why do you think the sky looks red at sunset?
