Someone told me this riddle. Anyone have any suggestions as to its answer?

You have a box with contents that are supposed to be very precious to you, but you have lost the key and cannot open the box without the key. If you try to force the box open in any way, such as smashing it open or picking the lock, the contents of the box will be permanently ruined. If you leave the box closed, obviously all you have is a box worth very little if un-openable. So, what would you do?

Update:

And No, it's not an egg

I would put it into another box, lock it and throw the key away. Then I will try to open this bigger box by doing what I just did.

Is the box open to begin with? If so, don't shut the box, transfer the contents to a box you can open.

This is not a problem technically. Go find a locksmith. They are best making duplicator key. But since this is a riddle, my answer is let it be. Do not open it. Precious things need be kept.

Actually the riddle goes: "A box without hinges key or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid"....it's an egg!! And it's from J.R.R. Tolkien's "Hobbit". Nice try though!

I would leave it unopened. The contents do not change just because you can not get to them. If they started out precious to you, they will still be precious to you in an unopened box.

Personally, I would use a bobby-pin to try and pick the lock. If that didn't work I would leave it alone - maybe I'm not meant to touch the contents.

Saw half-way through, all the way around the box and crack it like an egg.

I will have a go, if you will not think me rude. I have no intention of being such, but when I saw your riddle and read it, I thought back to an Elizabethan prototype, the answer of which was, "the key is to tell her you love her".

ei, the contents in the box are very precious to you. then if it's that precious, it just means that you already know what's inside. just leave it that way. you already knew what's inside.

Since your treasures are safe in the box you keep the box and treasure it as a man would treasure his life.
