a 5MP digital camera refers to five million pixels. which would be the highest amount of quality you could get in a picture. this is for still images usually,and every camera is different (so look in your instruction book) but the video setting are lower than the still quality of images you can get. but video goes at so many frames per second that the quality doesn't have to be as high.

when recording video you don't choose MP you choose from options like your computer monitor when you set it such as 480X640 or in terms of 340Kb /sec. you usually don't choose MP for still pictures on most of the camera's I've seen either. they are chosen in terms of 1600X1200 also.

in your manual they will list the differences in the specifications section.

It's not the Quality, its the size of the picture, a 5Mp picture has 5 million pixels.

MP or MegaPixel= One million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a graphics device, such as a scanner, digital camera or monitor.

MB or Megabit= 1 megabit = 106 = 1,000,000 bits which is equal to 125,000 bytes or 125 kilobytes useful for measuring RAM and ROM chip capacity.

Further to Nikon Girl's post, digital video is all recorded at the same resolution = about 500 lines per inch versus analogue video at 240 lines per inch. All the hype about VGA,XVGA,SVGA, YVGA, etc is just that marketing hype to suck you into the vortex.

So just so we're all clear, if it'd digital and its video the resolution is 500 lines per inch. All the VGA's and CCD's and other crap this side of the Mississippi don't affect the output quality a single iota.
