Tipping painters??

Do you tip house painters? If so, how much?

We had 6 guys here for 7 days. They did a great job, but I don't think that you typically tip painters. Any thoughts?

In this case, it is probably most pertinent to know if you hired the painting company, or if they were hired by a contractor. If you hired the painting company, and the painters they sent provided good service, I would tip them. If they were hired by a contractor, do NOT tip them. You never want to confuse the issue of for whom they are working. Ultimately, your contractor is responsible for whether or not the painting is perfect. If you begin paying the painters ANYTHING directly, it can confuse the legal issues.

Aside from this, the rule is that you tip people for "good service." You do not tip them if they are the owner/operator (if they work for themselves, rather than a larger company). Do you feel that they are providing a good service? I tip movers (they work for a company), but not my housekeeper (she works for herself), my manicurist (she works for the salon), but not my massage therapist or my yoga instructor (they both have private studios), and so on...

I am having outside work and painting done on the house.... but.....

My cookies make my workers disappear !!

Yesterday, I bought some (nice, deli baked) cookies and gave them to the workers

(although they did not share.... and I know one of the guys in the back of the house didn't get any)

Then I looked up online how much $$ to tip house painters and repair guys

(and I will give them $$ at the end) but....

It also said OH AND THEY LOVE DRINKS AND COOKIES

SO I made more 2 more batches of cookies today

SO what happened with two days of cookies

    THE WORKERS ARE ALL GONE

One (main guy !!) did not even show up today

Then the other main guy left (guess he thought if the one guy stayed home,he could leave too !)

SO then two other guys came .....worked a little.... I gave them cookies....

    AND THEY LEFT !!!

MY COOKIES ARE DRIVING THEM AWAY !!

It's rude and unprofessional to ask for a tip. I run a painting company and contractors who squeal for more money often are shonky painters. Double check everything before agreeing it's complete. Strategy: Make him a coffee while you are at come. Stand around with him while he drinks it and drink yours. Then next time he says don't forget the tip say "I'm the one serving the coffee's, where's mine". If he persists say "You've only got one joke, haven't you?" You have a contract. If he doesn't like the price, he should have raised the quote.

I manage a team that has painters if they do a good job tip them, it's not expected but I know my guys feel good when they get a tip it makes them more confident in their work too and they like to know good work is appreciated. If someone does bad work you mention it in a sec why not congradulate good work it doen't necessarly need to be money but anything really because it means more than the financial value

We made coffee, cookies, lemonade, etc., for the painters at our house...they made good money, so tipping was out of the question.....

In olden days, you could get off by giving them a pack of cigarettes. Maybe a 10% tip would do? Or a small gift

Never heard of tipping a contractor.

I have often bought lunch. (sandwiches, chicken, pizza, etc)

But I have never tipped them. But, since you mentioned them doing a good job, you might slip the lead contractor a couple of twenties and suggest he take them out for a round of drinks.

But the best thing you can do to thank a contractor for a good job is to pass on job referrals to them.
