Theory of Eragon/Eldest?
I have previously posted this theory in answer to moonlightNY. This is what I believe Christopher Paolini is working up to, a great twist that fits perfectly into everything stated so far. If you wish to wait until the release of the final book in the trilogy, then please do not read this.
In the final chapters of Eldest, Murtagh reveals himself to be related to Eragon. He tells of his mother, Selena, who is Eragon's mother as well. And he takes the sword Zar'roc, saying the firstborn of Morzan should recieve it as inheritance. I would like to rebut this, because I firmly believe Brom to be Eragon's father. When Brom and Eragon left Teirm, Brom mentioned knowing Selena "well enough to miss her when she was gone." Also, near the end, the witch Angela tells of a love Brom held for one woman, but it was his affection that was her undoing. Selena could be that woman. Then, as a reread Eldest, I noticed small clues of similarity between Brom and Eragon. Such as Oromis saying...
...about Eragon, "You remind me of Brom when I chose him as my apprentice." Also, just because Murtagh and Eragon are similar doesn't mean they share the same father. Maybe they are similar through the mother, or because both fathers are Riders. Angela's prediction of a betrayal from within Eragon's family serves true; Murtagh is still his half brother. It alls fits, because Selena went back to Carvahall. She may have been pregnant before she left, but she may have gone to be with Brom. And though this theory implies a child born out of wedlock, it also implies Selena and Brom loved each other, much more than can be said for Selena and Morzan. That is my theory, and a good one, if I say so myself. If it turns out true, Paolini has been working a masterful twist from the very beginning. I may go so far as to say a greater twist than Harry Potter has yet lived up to.
And I am so very sorry I forgot to ask, what is your prediction of the third story, and what do you think of my theory?

I think that's an excellent theory- there is a lot to support it. I must say, I wasn't expecting the twist at the end of eldest. I figured Murtagh and the twins would come back and that another dragon would hatch, but I totally missed them being brothers. I wondered if they had the same father but different mothers, but now that I've seen your theory it does make me wonder. hmm... I'll have to reread both of them now. I wonder is Roran will become the other rider (though that could be too predictable). In any case, it would certainly help him get Katrina back, and Sloan is going to do something unhelpful- like maybe turn into a shade. :P
