What is a pant? (as in a pair of pants)?

I've asked a lot of people and no one seems to know, but in a "pair of pants" which part is the pant? i know there are pant legs, so it has to be, and cannot be the legs, the it's not the waist because, well, that's the waist, so it has to be between the two, but that's basically all that there is to a pair of pants, it's basically two pant legs attached to the waist, but I may be wrong, that's why I am asking ;)

Update:

I've asked a lot of people and no one seems to know, but in a "pair of pants" which part is the pant? i know there are pant legs, so it has to be, and cannot be the legs, the it's not the waist because, well, that's the waist, so it has to be between the two, but that's basically all that there is to a pair of pants, it's basically two pant legs attached to the waist. But pant "leg" means that it's the leg of the pant, the lower extremity of the pant, but not the pant, and there have to be two of them because it's a pair of pants.

The whole thing is a pant. It's just an odd piece of terminology that we use to call it a "pair".

FYI, we women also often refer to our stockings as "a pair of pantyhose".

If a pant is one leg - than two pant legs put together are pants!
