Yes, the slam dunk was eliminated fromt he NCAA for about 10 years. Guys would elevate over the rim, but just have to drop the ball down. it was a slightly different game back then, with more of a premium on moving the ball and outside shooting (but there was no 3-point shot then, either.)

I am happy that they brought the dunk bank to college hoops, but I would like to see more players be able to play the complete game as well.

"In Mount's day, dunking wasn't a threat; dunking wasn't even allowed.

The NCAA banned it in 1967, in preparation for the Lew Alcindor era

at UCLA. The decision forced Alcindor - he now is known as Kareem

Abdul-Jabbar - to develop the sky hook, perhaps the deadliest shot

ever seen from a big man. Bill Walton, his successor at UCLA,

compensated for the no-dunk rule with a nifty bank shot.

In the mid-1970s, though, the game took off in a new direction when

Julius Erving's soaring performance in a slam-dunk contest at the 1976

American Basketball Association All-Star Game in Denver galvanized the

next generation of hoops addicts. The NCAA overturned its dunking ban

in 1976-77, laying the groundwork for the modern game."

#1 he was not Karem abdul Jabbar back then.

    He was Lew Al Cinder

#2 It's the dunk. I don't think it was because of him.

They also did it in Highschool when I was there.

It was pretty stupid having to drop it in once you got up there.

I never got the dunking call even though I did.

But I never got especially violent about it. Just did it to make sure it wasn't blocked.

Quite a few guys where I was lived above the rim.

Never saw a call. Knew the rule was there.
