I have done it so many times. Hot water on the counter with a scrubbie. and for the carpet use a steam cleaner. If you dont have one it will take a while but pour hot water over it and try removing as much as you can, let it dry and harden pull off as much as you can and repeat it till it is all gone.

Ouch. Don't use an iron, or any heat, because the heat of the iron etc. etc. can melt the synthetic fibers in your carpet, and make the problem worse. The best idea is to use baby powder or corn starch to dry up the wax, then apply a towel with ice in it (you don't want the powder to get wet) and get the area very cold. As the wax becomes more brittle you can use a comb to comb it out of the carpet. When you are all finished, vaccum up the last little bits.

On the counter.. put baby powder on so it dries up a bit it and scrape off.
On the carpet, the only thing I can think of is to get some paper bags and put them over the waxed area and get an iron and iron over it. The paper bags will absorb the wax. Works on spilt candle wax so I would assume it would work for this.

put a towel over the wax. Take a warm iron and iron over the towel. The iron will melt the wax, and the towel will absorb the melted wax. You may need to use several towels to get it all up.
This works with candle wax for sure, so its worth a try.

on the counter just scrape it off with a thick or hard flat surface that wont break, then with the left overs use wax-off from the beauty shop to clean it off.
carpet: try and pull as much of it out as you can.. use latex gloves so it doesnt get all over your hands, then the remander try using wax off...

If you use an iron, make sure you set it on low, otherwise you can melt the carpet.
