What's up with my desktop icons and toolbar disappearing?

Okay, this is really pissing me off. It does this a couple times a day and leaves nothing visible but the wallpaper. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

    Right click on desktop

    Click properties

    Goto desktop tab

    click customize desktop

    go to Web tab

    and here deselect all pages (if you have selected one!)

    That's it.
