Can I use an unpowered subwoofer when only a preamp is available?
I have a 7.1 system where the only subwoofer connection is for the subwoofer pre-amp out. I only have an unpowered subwoofer. Can i use that port? or can I wire it into one of the surround channels and it will just pass the low frequency sound?

The unpowered subwoofer will lack the necessary punch to be heard at any discernable level from the pre-amp out and really you have no option but to trade it for a powered unit.
Linking the unit into the surround channels will not provide enough audio to drive the sub and the digital effects on the surround channels will play havoc with true sound reproduction plus you lower the impedence on that channel possibly overdriving it, risking damage.
