If I threw down some grass seed, do you think it would grow at this time of year?

Or do I need to wait for spring? It does snow here,,, so it most likely wont do any good . Right or wrong?

Update:

I live in California ''the mountains''

The best time to throw grass seeds down is mid spring, you would be better to wait until then, as the weather is getting cooler now & most plants become dormate over the winter period. The frost & snow will kill the grass seedlings when they sprout as they will not be mature enough to handle the cold tempreture.

Not knowing what part of the country that you live in- it's hard to say. Grass seed likes a soil temperature of 55 degrees F in order to germinate. I planted a yard for my cousin 4-5 weeks ago and she is just now seeing grass (it was rainy but cold after it was planted). Another lawn was seeded a few years ago after Thanksgiving and they had grass before Christmas (that was very unusual). You could seed between now and March but don't expect to see grass. The freeze/thraw cycle will actually "plant" the seed in the soil. btw- I am in SW Ohio! Good Luck!

Think it might be too late. I'd wait until spring. No sense in wasting grass seed.

Think this is the time of year, in some areas, when you plant grass seed. Sow it and cover it with straw during the rainy season.

Normally the ground temp needs to be 60 or above for the seeds to germinate.

It will grow if you sow it before the frost starts. Rake it & work it into the soil to help protect it from the frost & birds. It will start slow in the spring but gradually fill in nicely by early summer.
