What might happen if you switched gears in an automatic while the car was moving?

The car was moving at a very slow speed. Under 5 miles per hour. I heard a clicking noise while it was moving but as soon as the car stopped the noise was gone. I checked all the gears and they seem to be fine. The clicking noise is not there anymore either. Do you think the car is okay?

Update:

The car was in drive and the driver slowed down almost to a stop but tried to put the car in park before it stopped completely

it depends on what gear you switch it to. most automatics will let you put your car into only first gear, or only second gear. if you are going too fast your car will down shift, either your engine will start going way to fast or if you are going fast enough you will strip your transmission and could snap your drive chain, not to metion horible internal engine components braking

if you switch going a slow speed it will just switch with no apparent problems, though its kinda hard on ur car if you are going fast enough and generaly not a good idea.

switching into overdrive, or nutral wont hurt ur car at all.

oh, that was assuming its an automatic. i shoulda read whole question.

if you continue to drive, and hear no problems. it should be ok.

the clicking sound will happen if you try to put the car in reverse while the car is rolling forward. That is very bad for the transmission. Be sure not to do it again. :)

Depends on which gear you put it into. You can shift into neutral or a lower gear without harming your car. If you threw it into reverse that is another story.

that's prolly in basic terms a shifter linkage did you hit something that would have bent it only crawl decrease than it and see no depend if that's bent if so straighten it or would desire to be the lock on the brake pedal once you hit the brakes to shift from park it un locks it the lock would desire to be malfunctionig you're able to ought to take the console out to diagnose and attach this prob yet prolly certainly one of those solid success

prabably nothin but you can destroy the tranny going to reverse from forward at higher speeds / if your going forward and drop aforward gear its emediate rise in rpms but not recomended to do often cause it will cause tranny wear also or kill your pumps in it or strip your tourge converter
