Does anyone else cast the fiction book you are reading?

Frequently, (the last one I read and casted simultaneously was The Eyre Affair) but it's more common for me to score it - I'm a theatre sound engineer and I can often hear appropriate music playing while I'm reading (which can get quite annoying if I'm reading to relax) !

I do. I don't cast every book with actresses and actors though. Or sometimes I'll read a book and a character will sound a lot like one of my friends and so I end up picturing my friend as that character all the way through.

No. Whenever I see the movie version I am always disappointed so I don't want to think of a book in that way. However there are some books that I read which have the lead character who does things so horrible that I will often wonder if it is even possible to make a movie from the book.

I have read well over 565,000 books in my life and the interesting ones I do that for them. Whether it is sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries, adventure/thrillers, westerns, etc. If you want to read a really great book that does that for you, try reading a book written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle several years ago called 'Dream Park'. This is one fantastic book and if it ever gets made into a movie it would probably gross more than the Matrix or LOTR or Star Wars movies. Most of the players in the book are real, but the other people are holograms and you cannot tell the difference 99% of the time. Fantastic read. Try it you'll like it(as Mikey says).

The best casting job I've ever seen was for "ANNE OF GREEN GABLES" -- I read the book years ago - many,many times, and when I saw the movie , the cast fitted the characters to a T -- I think Lucy Maud Montgomery would have been thrilled!!!

I don't do it intentionally, but I do usually imagine the characters in the book looking like certain actors and actresses. I think it helps me get into the story more to have an idea of what the character looks like.

I do, but not in the sense that you're talking about.

I often cast people as certain characters but very rarely do they have names in my head. Occasionally they'll bear a resemblance to someone famous, but I usually don't think of it that way.

Reading is like an art film: You're watching people you've never heard of in your life play out a story that isn't like any other and has no summary and no reviews. You're stuck there and you want to be stuck there. You don't want anyone to spoil it for you and it really helps knowing that you aren't filling the pockets of some promiscuous lady of the night who's currently on her third wedding that is destined to last for all of two days.

With this in mind, you know that it'll be like no other and the acting is just as god as you want it to be.

I don't so much cast as have an image in my head of what the characters look like, and like Rich, when the book is made into a movie, have been bitterly disappointed!

The casting of Richard Chamberlain in the Thornbirds for one. The priest has piercing blue eyes and hair as black as a raven's wing.........??????? They got that wrong!
