Do you think the USA can ever have English as our main language?

I am sick of eating up I don't know how many cell minutes because I have to go through the other languages just to get to english when I call banks and other automated lines.

Update:

I understand English is considered our main language but it isn't used that way.

You'd think so, wouldn't you, Gary?

Kinda takes some doing, though; because we've got around 60 % of the population that doesn't speak English.

In fact, around 40% speak Spanish!

Though they can all speak fluent American when they want to, they can suddenly turn "No hablo inglese." at the drop of a hat!?

So, I guess you know where the Asker is coming from, now.

Maybe, but first the yankis should learn to speak it.

According to what so many honorable men have written as answer to this question, when the english came to this country, they should have learnt the language of the Indians or go back to England.

I have the feeling that instead, they made the Indians learn english. There is a sentence that says: "what goes around comes around", ENJOY

i thought english was our main language. we have become so globalized that businesses don't want to lose money because of language barriers. i am first generation born here and grew up with parents who spoke very little english, it will be hard but i think anyone who lives in this country should make an effort to learn english.

What you complain about is due to the GREED o fthe banks and other companies who put the $$$$$ gain from Hispanics way ahead of any loyalty to English. It's all for the money.

Banks also are now opening accounts & giving loans to illegal aliens LACKING ANY Social Security # . did you know this?. used to be that banks would refuse to do this. now they are greedy for the $$$$.

Meanwhile, in good ol' Mexico - if a foreigner wants to take out a loan or open an account or buy real estate, Mexico has draconian rules which make this virtually impossible. Mexicans are inhospitable to foreigners. They jealously restrict who can & who can't buy & invest In Mexico. but here, it's a chaos, a madhouse with no national pride In English or North American identity. Mexico & most other countries would NEVER, EVER tolerate Americans living there & demanding Communications be provided in English for their convenience. they would tell someone to f-u-c-k- off & go back to his country.

Call them all back and complain. The other day I called Valley National Bank (this is in northern New Jersey) ATM card activation service, and got a recording to press 1 for English. I refuse to press anything for English. The recording came back on in a few seconds and said it could not take my call. As it turns out, in effect I have to actively select "not Spanish" in order to be connected.

My feeling is I should not ever have to press 1 for English. I also think that if someone wants to speak Spanish or any other language in their private conversations or at home that is fine, no problem at all. But when you get out into a corporate/general public situation, then it should be English only and forget all the wasted time and money dealing with Spanish/English choices.

There is a practical reason for this, maybe two. One is that if people have to use English in daily general public/work related environments it is better in terms of overall communications, and secondly for clarity. Recently I went to a supermarket to pick up a bottle of bleach. The back label was split into Spanish and English. This forces you to look around to find the proper language but even more importantly, because there are now TWO versions of everything, it is all twice as small. The warnings and cautionary statements are all so tiny now as to be almost unreadable. The difference is striking when you compare a lable in English only with a bi-lingual label. The same thing goes to instruction and operating manuals for tools and appliances. Most of the text is taken up with foreign languages. We don't really need all this. One of the requirements for citizenship is a basic command of English, but with the influx of illegals and the flagrant disregard for our laws the corporations are catering to the illegal minorities at the expense of the rest of us.

Unless apathetic, lazy Americans are willing to stand up and yell their heads off att his outrage they will wake up one moring and find everything in Spanish and they will be unable to understand a word.

You silly girl, English IS the main language of the United States. But we have freedom of speech here and that means freedom to speak Spanish. Banks and ATMs want customers in the Spanish-speaking population, so live with it. If you don't want to live in a multilingual population, then move to Antarctica.

And for the ignorant people who say "enforce the law", English is NOT the official language of the United States. I has NEVER been the official language.

Yeah, me too! It used to be when you came to America, you sat at a "reservation" like Ellis Island, until you could speak the language, and understand your rights under the Constitution.(Remember the constitution?) NOW these jack***es think we should cater to those who don't speak English! Well ***k them! If you travel to another country, you'd BETTER be able to speak their language, or you'll starve! Not all foreign countries use english as a second or third language...If you want to live here, speak English or go back to where you came from.

First of all english is the main language. The problem is all these people from different countries who are to lazy to learn english. If you are going to live in this country, learn english.

If the BNP ever got here to power and all started throwing human beings in a overseas u . s . i'd imagine that many different international locations would throw out and ban human beings from the united kingdom for a commence.
