Is it just me or do gay/lesbians come out in bulk?

Yes, they are coming out more and more. Two reasons:

It's not unlawful anymore. This is the first generation that has not witnessed laws against being gay, so they dare to come out.

Because that topic is discussed in politics so often (that is annoying enough), people also announce it 'louder', to say: Well, you didn't suspect *I* was gay, and am I a bad person in your eyes now? Look at how many we are. Even animals are. How dare you call us perverts and unlawful.

I'm not offended. Then again I'm straight and happily married. But I do see your point as well as agree with you that these people are our equals. Prejudice is something I do not tolerate.

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that homosexuality is becoming more and more accepted. And I do agree with the first two answers....safety in numbers! You don't feel so alone.

It may be safety in numbers and may lessen the blow or shock when you discover that so-and-so is gay

It's easier when your in a pack.
