What did Saddam Hussein do that was so bad?

I am not being sarcastic, I am just wondering what specific things he did that we can justify a war to remove him from power that is killing thousands of innocent people.

Update:

I have everything from he gased 148 Kurds, to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of people, to use of WMDs (which I personally thought there was no proof of). Which are lies, and what is the truth?

He supervised genocide against the Kurds and Shiites in Iraq.Big deal, aren't a lot of world leaders guilty of the same offense? His major error was to threaten oil supply to the US the day he invaded Kuwait. So he has to go by force! The same innocent people are now busy blowing themselves up to smithereens with little or no assistance from the bad boy Saddam Hussein.

Most everything already said has relevance to your question, but as I understand recent events. It started when Saddam invaded Kuwait. The US and other allies went over there and drove him out of Kuwait, put out the oil fires and made a cease fire agreement with Saddam. In the agreement, Saddam agreed to let UN inspectors supervise the destruction of WMD's which Saddam had at the time. The UN inspectors never had the free reign they had bargained for, but the UN let that slip.... no worries right. A few years later Saddam outright refused to let the UN inspectors have access to certain areas, again against the cease fire agreement Saddam had signed, and again the UN let it go... no worries. The US began to insist the UN live up to the terms of the UN cease fire agreement or take actions to force compliance. Saddam never yielded, so war broke out. That to me is the central issue that started the war... Saddam's failure to live up to his agreement. All the other issues... genocide, WMD's are supporting reasons. Valid or not, the supporting reasons alone were not sufficient to start war. It was the violations against UN resolutions that justified the war.

The other issues like the oil for food scandal, WMD's or no WMD's, have clouded the media with so much smoke, the real reason for the war I doubt is even recognizable.

    1. He used poison gas (which he probably got from the USA) many years ago to kill Kurds in Iraq. This predated the years that the US supported him in his fight with Iran.

    2. He was ruthless in suppressing anyone against his rule.

    3. Supposedly, he tried to get someone to kill George Bush's father.

Number 3. and the fact that Iraq has a large part of the world's oil are felt by many to be reasons for Bush to lie about WMD and invade the country.

    The preliminary charges were:

Anfal 'ethnic cleansing' campaign against Kurds, 1988

Gassing Kurds in Halabja in 1988

    Invasion of Kuwait, 1990

Crushing the Kurdish and Shia rebellions after the 1991 Gulf War

Killing political activists over 30 years

Massacre of members of the Kurdish Barzani tribe in 1983

Killing of religious leaders in 1974

as given on the BBC News site.

It also has a lot to do with oil and the balance of power in the middle east but our propaganda isn't going to tell us that.

I believe you can massacre people and get away with it. I will post sources if people get annoyed.

besides killing thousands of random citizens, gassing the kurds and waging war with iran, he kept iraq under relative control.

Used weapons of mass destruction, in this case chemical weapons in the form of poison gas, not once but twice. He used it in the Iran/Iraq war and he used it against the Kurdish minority in northern Iraq.

Given his avowed dedication to acquire an atomic weapon, his proven willingness to use weapons of mass destruction and his expulsion of the inspectors that were part of the agreement to end the first Gulf War, I think it's only logical to think that he was a huge danger.

He systematically committed genocide on the Kurds as well as the Shiites in Iraq. He got his start in the 1980s on it and it has finally caught up to him.

Wow.... paying to much attention to the liberal media????

He was responsible for the murder of thousands of Kurds. He used chemical weapons on his own people. He stole from the UN money for oil program. He ignored international law. He invaded Kuwait. Should I go on?
