If you get arrested and get one phone call only, and that one person doesn't answer, do you get another call?

the one phone call rumor is just that...most of the time you can make as many calls as you need to...as long as the booking office and officers in the booking area have the time you can call anyone as often as you need. Most jails are overcrowded and they want you to be able to bail out and go to court before they have to house you.

That is something that goes by the individual county in Orange County California you can have all the collect calls you need while your in the cell with a phone while your going through the "loop" (the loop is a series of cells that you are taken to during the booking process at the main jail. When your in the branch jail waiting for transport they put you in a cell with a pay phone where you can make collect calls only. Then they transfer you to the loop and you once again can make collect calls from the cell with the pay phone in it you are in this cell usually anywhere from 15 min to 6 hours dependent on how crowded the jail is at that time. Booking can take up to 30 hours so really it depends on where you are and if you have access to a jail (paid) phone. Also keep in mind they are listening to everything you say so don't say anything incriminating. Ask you attorney to come down to the jail and speak in an attorney meeting room. That way you don't incriminate yourself further.

Are you silly? This is only in the movies. In real life you can make as many phone calls as you want except they are collect calls. I have a few friends in jail and have even been in jail myself..

the only way you are stopped from getting phone calls in jail is if the jail is on lock down or after you get booked into jail and are staying a while.. they turn the phones off after a certain time at night.. usually around 11 pm. But if you have just been put in jail you can call everyone you know.. if they have a phone that excepts collect calls.

Most jails have a pay phone for collect calls in the common areas anyway, so you can make as many calls as you like and your family will pay for.

You should... if you don't, your lawyer will have a good opportunity in your defense. For the courts, "getting your phone call" means that you actually contacted someone to let them know where you are. (The risk is that you are jailed without anyone's knowledge, and nobody will be able to come to your defense if you are detained too long without Due Process.)
