I have an ipod and an Archos Gmini. I much prefer the Gmini.
You don't have to "synch" anything.
It just works as a hard drive.
You can use it on as many machines as you'd like.
You can find songs via folders rather than scrolling through lists. You can play more different types of files (mp3, wmv, wav, etc) than an ipod.
The only thing you'd have to worry about is the power adaptor.

I've owned a couple of different Creative Labs players in the past before I bought my iPod. While I thought I was cool "bucking the trend" and getting something different, the ones I had (MuVo^2 and Zen Touch) were horrible little things with terrible interfaces and that broke so easily. That, and the thing I love the most about the iPod is the variety of accessories available for it, including tons of protective cases to choose from.
