my nephew won't quit throwing.....?

my sister (his mother) and I are pretty much raising my nephew. and whenever we sit him down to eat he will throw his food. or dump it out of the bowl/off the plate. he is only 19 months old. we've ignored it, smacked his hands and even put him in time out. any ideas as to what we can do to get him to quit?

This is normal behavior for a child that age try just giving finger foods on the high chair tray no plate needed make sure he is truely hungry before serving and dont pick stuff up of the floor and put it back on the tray once thrown its gone do however replace what he has trown off with fresh food from the serving plate at the table. This is cause and effect behavior he is getting a rise out of you never spank or hit this will asociate pain and food - not good

don't give him too much food. Say just a couple bites and if he throws the food, tell him he won't get any more and then don't give him anymore. When he's hungry, tell him why. A couple times of him crying for food should break the throwing habit. He'll have to learn the hard way. Good luck!

Dont give him all his food at once. I always gave my kids a little at a time. He is just testing his limits with you, so really ignoring it is the best. I mean ignore it every single time for days in a row and dont even look at him when he does it. Go on with aconverstion and pretend nothing is going on, and dont clean it up until he is out of the room. He will eventually stop this.

ignoring it should be the best bet...maybe you didnt do it consecutively enough times...hes probably gonna keep doing it because of the reaction hes getting from you guys....at this age kids are testing their limits.....and how their actions create reactions from people....it will be a messy job...but if you dont make a big deal of it...im sure itll all be over before ya know it

quit giving him any to throw! I never gave my kids food in a way that left them time to throw it. I fed them myself. and in the case of finger food, i gave them it piece by piece.

umm...uve endured this for how long. did taking him to the doctor ever come to mind? he might have allergies, issues with foods, etc and youve been smacking his hands the whole time....for shame.

WHEN HE THROWS HIS FOOD MAKE HIM PICK IT UP IF IT IS A SANDWICH OR SOMETHING MAKE HIM PICK IT UP AND EAT IT. LET HIM KNOW THAT IT IS NOT RIGHT TO THROW FOOD AND IF HE CONTINUES TO THROW FOOD HE WONT HAVE SNACK LATER AND HE WILL HAVE TO HAVE A NAP AND YOU NEED TO STICK TO WHAT YOU SAY
