How cheap is it to name a star?

I was thinking of getting a star named, and I was wondering:

1. Does it last? Will cheap companies resell your star or just never name it?

2. Where's the cheapest, most realiable site?

3. Where can you name a star not just one person's name, but a name you want? I.E. not Maggie Smith but Shining Light

4. Have you named a star? What are your experiences?

Any other useful info would be helpful. Thanks!

It costs nothing to name a star, but there's a catch: you have to be the astronomer who discovers it! However, I know you're thinking of those companies that say they'll name a star after you, for a fee. What they do is simply publish a book containing all those stars that are named after their customers. The books don't get wide circulation, and the names are not official, nor recognized by anyone except the company that produces it. I'm sure those companies would let you name a star anything you want. And you could go to different companies, and have the star given different names. Or you could create a document on your computer, using a graphics program, naming the star...that would be about as "official," and recognized, as having some one else do it.

Correction: I thought you could name a star if you discovered it, but apparently, there are so many of them out there that they just get assigned numbers. But you CAN discover, and name, your very own comet! And all you need is a decent rich-field telescope or really good binoculars, and LOTS of time on your hands.

    Name A Star Cheap

You can't buy the name of a star. The best you can do is pay some company money to register a manuscript with the copyright office that says such-and-such a star is now named after you. There are multiple companies doing this and nothing prevents several companies from "selling" the name to the same star.

The International Astronomical Union is the only body that can give real names and designations to stars and they do so only for scientific, not commercial or entertainment, reasons. See their great FAQ on the subject, linked to below.

    In short, save your money.

Jacob's right, no star can be "officially" named by anyone, and check out that FAQ page from the IAU about this practice. On the other hand if you don't mind dropping 35$ on a nicely printed certificate, go for it, but all you are buying is whatever they send to you as a confirmation, and an entry in a book (or database) that they may or may not really have.

Source(s): Just to reinforce it that FAQ at: http://www.iau.org/BUYING_STAR_NAMES.244.0.html details what's really going on.

From $54 dollars and up. This site will give you all the information, and no, I haven't named a star.

Also, read disclaimers. This one is from http://www.nameastarspacelaunch.com/:

The scientific community refers to stars by catalog numbers and astronomical coordinates. Your star name and message will be recorded in our database and in an orbiting SSI Archive, but no star-naming service changes the scientific designations of stars.

I don't understand why people want to name a star. "Happy birthday, honey! For your gift, I named A HUGE BALL OF GAS after you."

I believe it costs $35 dollars to use the "star registry," although I have not used it myself.
