I'd like a pet that's small enough that it doesn't need a ridiculous amount of care, and big enough that it doesn't need to be kept in a cage 24/7. Most importantly, my pet should enjoy interacting and playing with me.

A cat or dog is out of the question. Similarly, more "scary" reptiles, due to a housemate being terrified of them, aren't options, so no tarantulas/snakes/things that go bump in the night.

And, if at all possible, I'd like only one pet. I'd go with a rat, but they function best with more than one.

I don't have a gigantic budget, but I'm willing to spend time on the pet.

Any ideas?

I was thinking of getting a star named, and I was wondering:

1. Does it last? Will cheap companies resell your star or just never name it?

2. Where's the cheapest, most realiable site?

3. Where can you name a star not just one person's name, but a name you want? I.E. not Maggie Smith but Shining Light

4. Have you named a star? What are your experiences?
