How do you punish a cat for going to the bathroom on the couch?

My wife's cat is crazy. All she does is sit under the couch all day. She normally uses her litter box, but every once in a while she'll pee on the carpet or poop on the couch. She knows she's supposed to use the litter box. My wife thinks maybe she does it for attention, but she'll go sit with her and pet her for at least 2 hours a day.

You can not punish the cat for something after the fact. You should actually catch her in the act for her to know that your reaction is to the act she is doing. Yelling or repremanding her after the fact is meaningless, she'll have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

Have you had her checked out medically? Where's the litterboxes? Are they cleaned daily? Do you have one box for stool and the other for urine? (some cats like it that way). What kind of litter do you use? The questions are endless. But if it's ruled out that it's a medical problem, then it's behavioral. The vet might have a better idea of how to allleviate the problem.

Have her checked by a vet to be sure there is a medical reason why she is doing this. At that time, if her heath is good, the vet may recommend some ideas for you.

Be sure the litter box is very clean, cats can be very particular and some won't use the box if there is even one mess in there. Also, there should be two boxes per cat (sounds insane, doesn't it?).

Cats and canines alike dont like the scent of vinegar. attempt a small portion of your settee to ascertain that it does not replace shade with vinegar. If it dont replace shade, placed some vinegar in a bottle and spray the settee with it. If it does replace shade attempt it on a white sheet and place the sheet on the settee sprayed in vinegar. you additionally can dilute the vinegar in water however the greater desirable the greater effective because it is going to shop them from occurring the settee and additionally do away with the stain and odour from them going. I additionally propose you scoop the container every day Wash it weekly with cleansing soap and water dumping out the previous clutter thoroughly and including new clutter to the container. As they're very sparkling animals and do unlike a grimy or semi-grimy container. yet another suggestion could be to attempt a diverse sort of clutter. I had a difficulty till now with a definite clutter i offered, the cats might use the container as quickly as then no longer pass returned into it till it became into washed. some varieties litters does not soak up nicely sufficient and nevertheless supplies off a odour combating the cats from utilizing it. Wishing you success.. From an proprietor of 5 cats and one dogs

You cannot punish a cat. Cats don't work that way. You can deter them with a spray bottle if you see them doing something you don't want them to do, but that won't stop them doing it when you are not around.

If your cat is pissing on the furniture it is trying to tell you something. Ours was doing the same thing and it turned out he wasn't too happy with his covered litterbox - not so miserable that he didn't use it most of the time, just once in a while he got it in his mind to use the furniture instead. We got him a huge new one and he has never done it since. Try to figure out what the cat is trying to tell you.

Also if they can smell where they went before, they tend to go there again so clean it well. Pouring Dettol or rubbing alcohol on the area and saturating it sometimes works.

It is worth noting that sometimes cats that go on the furniture are having difficulty urinating so take hime to the vet for a urinalysis to rule that out as well.

    Dear Ryan***

The places where she is doing her business, is that where you normally sit?!!!!!

If your cat has been around your wife for so long, it should sleep on the couch next to your wife. Do you not allow your cat on the couch. Have you ever hit the cat for being on the couch? If yes to all the above, she will carry on doing it until you find your OWN couch. That is her territory, and you are invading.

Do not ever hit any animal. The spray bottle is perfect, and they should be trained from little.

Always make sure you use an enzyme cleaner specifically for pet stains when you clean behind her or she will go there again. Once an animal marks a spot they think it's okay to go there again. Never use water on the stain as all that does is spread the scent out or deeper into the material. Always blot up as much as possible then follow the cleaners directions exactly.

You don't punish. You teach. When she does that, grab her softly, say NO, and take her to the litter box, and put the poo in there. If you punish her, she will do worse next time to get even. And check if she has any health problem or if the litter is not very clean.

Kitty might have a urinary tract infection. Going outside of the litterbox is a huge sign. Take kitty to vet to determine if it is a medical or behaviour problem. That's what I did for my cat, and am I ever glad I did. She had crystals in her urine, which is treatable, and now she uses only her litterbox.

I just say no in a firm voice and spray it with a bottle. Never rub thier nose with it or flick it on the nose. That is cruel.

apparently cats won't poo where their food is or has been,so you could try feeding her in different places around where she is doing this.I tried it with mine and it seems to have worked....got to be worth a try.
