Why do some writers (e.g., Stephen King) feel like they can tell JK Rowling how to end the Harry Potter series

That's a good question, but you've got to look at Stephen King's comment in context.

He (Stephen King), J.K. Rowling and John Irving were in New York speaking together for a two - day charity reading/symposium type thing. the event featured the opportunity for questions to be asked from the audience, and even the author Salman Rushdie was peppering Rowling with questions. Stephen King's comments came out more in the context of an extremely famous bestselling author telling a somewhat upstart bestselling author that he was a big fan of her work. If you read the full text of the talks, it seems to become clear that King loves Harry Potter and the comments are more like "oh, please don't!" and not "you shouldn't do that."

It's an interesting debate, because there is some speculation that J.K. Rowling may be thinking about killing off harry Potter just to make sure nobody else can pick up where she left off.

Source(s): I go to mugglenet.com daily for all my harry potter news, and lo and behold there is an editorial addressing this very subject (Stephen King's remarks) and offering an interesting assesement of King's works and how they have influenced the Potter universe. Read it here: http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/theubend/tub43... also if you dig further on mugglenet, you can find the text of those new york talks (although I don't have the link handy)

they think they can because they feel they have more experience. I think their just jealous b/c they didn't create the Harry Potter books. their good writers and all, but they should let JK Rowling do her own thing. I can't wait till the 7th book comes out!^_^

I think they are doing it in the interest of the kids.Like the article said, people get involved, and most of the people getting involved are kids, who are very impressionable.

So, they would feel bad that their "hero" harry died and also, it gives a conflicting ending....we are so used to the "good over evil" theory that most people cant digest any contrary ending. Also, it would be sending the wrong message to the kids.

first: i like stephen king, his novels are awesome and creepy lol and i think he's really twisted.. but that's ok lol

two: i think they feel like they can tell her what to do because they like the novels themselves. i think i read somewhere that king didn't want j.k. rowling to kill harry off, but that's not his call

a little bit of me thinks that they are jealous that they did not create the harry potter phenomenom

Because Stephen King is an outstanding and imaginative writer. Who has many best sellers to his name. I am sure he was only giving him well intended advice and trying to help him.
