If you have a contract that shows the rent was a set amount, take it to HUD and explain the situation. He/she may be trying to exploit more money out of you. The reason your on HUD is because for certain reasons you can not afford the regular rent in your area. This sounds a little crooked to me and he may wind up doing jail time for it. But then again the rules apply differently in every area. When my friend was on HUD she had to pay the difference between what HUD covered and the amount contracted. Example. Rent contract $575, HUD paid $450 she paid $125 each month. I would call your HUD agent today! I hope this helps.

As far as I know under HUD or any other lease once the rent is set you cannot be charged any extra rent until you renew your lease and at that point the owner has the right to raise your rent.

No he can not. You need to contact hud and let them know what is going on, before he tries to put you out or something.

He cannot raise the rent if you have a signed contract for the apartment. If he thinks he can he's full of it. (I'm a landlord.)

Goto Google and search for renters rights in your state. You'll find you have a ton more rights than you think you do! (Some landords take advantage of their renters!!!!)

He could if there is no written agreement that states he can't. However, he must give at least 30 days written notice to do so.
