Why does the Christmas songs talk about winter when the majority of Christmas shopping season is in the fall?

Winter starts on Dec. 21 when the Christmas season is almost over.

Update:

I mean they are already playing Christmas songs now.

Winter starting on Dec 21 is a fairly new concept in the big scheme of history. It used to be for many many centuries that Oct 31st was the end of harvest, thus the beginning of winter. That was even the case in the Middle Ages and Renaissance when there were really only 2 seasons: summer and winter. Dec 21st used to be considered Mid-winter, as it is still called by some, not the first day of winter. Fall and spring are modern concepts.

A big part of the Christmas season is the anticipation leading up to that day. I can only think of one Christmas song that has to do with shopping and that is Silver Bells. The spirit of Christmas has very little to do with shopping, although it is a factor to some people.

Something else is that certain areas feel like winter earlier than others. Some places it starts snowing and getting icy cold as early as October so it is like winter to those folks well before mid-December. Other areas never see winter weather at all.

Christmas songs don't deal with the shopping frenzy and consumerism that attaches to Christmas more and more each year. Many Christmas songs I can recall from different languages mention winter snows, winter cold, snow covered trees. Sleigh bells. Horse and carriage dashing through the snow. Winter fireplaces. When they start writing songs about the sale at Macy's or about having a MasterCard Christmas, then it's high time for a new Winter Solstice holiday.

Cause in some parts of the US, winter don't start until Dec. and lasts through April. I live in NC and we have had 70 degree weather this week. And Christmas isn't about people shopping, it's about spending time with your family's and enjoying the kids playing, the weather and special memories you make this time of year. Alot of people get married, engaged, have babies, get together with family only once a year activites. It's a time to sit back and relax. Christmas songs are to help us remember why we celebrate this special season, for me it is Jesus birthday. It may be different for others.

Technically, the Christmas season does not start until Christmas day and then continues for 12 days. Before Christmas is Advent for those following the religious affiliation and is Shopping for the more secular among us.

Back when those songs were written people didn't spend 3 months trying to purchase every single thing on their greedy kids' list.

The holiday season began literally just a few days before Christmas.

christmas songs = christmas carolling= before shopping centers= christmas eve= snowing

Notice that most christmas songs originated from snowing places. Remember "The Weather Outside?"

I don't know where you live but winter starts when it snows and we got two feet in October here. As far as Christmas goes the original intent had nothing to do with shopping and everything to do with the birth of christ. Our society has bastardized almost everything into a commericialized "shopping" holiday.

because that is continually snowing round Christmas, and that is in iciness a minimum of even as the vacation takes position. It is sensible to me! even as i imagine about listening to Christmas songs, i imagine about sitting in my warmth residing house on Christmas day and searching outdoors on the snow. it really is extremely the point of it i wager. they purely commence playing the songs too early contained in the season is all. it really is purely my opinion.
