Re Genesis: how many separate texts were compiled to make it?

Genesis appears to have been written by more than one author, based on differences in writing styles, overlap and versioning of stories (eg-the two descriptions of the creation). Can any serious scholar shed light on numbers of texts compiled, which parts are older or younger--based on analysis of language patterns or something concrete?

There were four: They are called the J, E, D, and P Documents.

    J for Judah (or Jerusalem)

    E for Elohim

    D for Deuteronomic

    P for Priestly

    Hope this helps

As "Time & Again" said, four main threads. (I could have sworn that the D thread in Genesis wasn't Deuteronomic, but I'll take his/her word for it that it is). The four threads all draw from a huge body of pre-biblical myth, legend, and folk lore from that area of the world- the fertile crescent/modern-day Isreal, Palestine, etc. The two creation stories, for example, are drawn from different stories in that folk lore background.
