Why don't most people have an avatar?

I was looking at the avatars and most are just the default one,  it pisses me off to see that?

Let's be honest- the options are pretty weak. I mean, the little cartoon faces people make are just plain idiotic. Also, why do I need to join "Yahoo 360" in order to upload a tiny little picture to use as an avatar? Not even worth my time...
