An Mp3 at 160kbps should be ok for the average person. Anything higher than 128kbps shouldnt sound too different. I personally use a mixture of 192-320 kbps AAC files.

it really is why i take advantage of WMA even as ripping CD's - a 192k WMA document has a similar sound high quality, if no extra useful than, a 320k MP3 document yet purely 60% of the size. Low bit costs will reason undesirable sound high quality because over-compressing the document will shrink treble reaction and would even make it sound "muddy".
