Is 6 months too young to start a baby on a sippy cup full time?

I ask becuase I am a full time daycare provider for a 6 month old little girl. Her parents have switched her to a soft topped sippy cup. She seems to get way too much formula at one time and is now spitting up and crying constantly. Would it make more sense to introduce the cup at meal/snack times and leave the bottle for formula? They tell me that she doesn't even need to be held now to be fed- just set her on the floor and she feeds herself! Have things changed this much since I had my youngest son 6 years ago? I always thought that babies this young needed the contact of being held and cuddled while having their bottles.....

I think you are right. I have three children of my own and am currently caring for two relatives and they all had the bottle until a year old and sippy cups at 6-9months with meals. And as far as sitting the baby in the floor to feed herself........that is just wrong in my opinion. Are her parents really young or is this maybe their first baby and they just don't know any better? Whatever it is I hope they get a clue.

Every parent does things different and most get offended when you try to correct them. IN my opinion 6 months is a bit young to ONLY use a sippy cup. BUt it depends on the sippy cups. Some softtip sippy cups are almost like bottles. I used some (sold at walmart) to try and wean my son from his bottle after 1 year. I would suggest you tell them to brin git up with their pediatrician because you heard it was too young. Saying it in a concerned but non judgemental way will get better results. As for not holding the baby.... that is something that has changed.. unfortunately. With all are modern baby gadgets.. experts are finding that babies are not getting enough contact and they are uncertain about the long term effects of this. I just read an article in Parenting magazine today about this! With all the swings, bouncers, play mats, exersaucers etc.. babies arent getting enough contact. (I write this asmy baby is in her exersaucer..ugh!) So they suggest holding you baby as often as possible ans interacting more. We live in a multitasking society and our future generation is feeling the effects of it. So forget what they say... hold that baby even more since it probably isnt getting held a whole lot at home! I am going to hold mine right now! ;)

My son was on a sippy cup full time at 6 months b/c I wanted to introduce it and then he wouldn't take a bottle anymore, but he also did fine...he wasn't getting too much and he was not spitting up. I think that maybe for this child..mealtimes like you suggested, would be better. And yes...they still need to be held at this age when they are eating. It almost sounds like the parents are working too much and I only say that because I was the same way for a while and it is detrimental for the child to have his parents around often.

    Good Luck!

That's way too young for a sippy full time. Introducing a sippy is right. And sitting alone at 6 months? She needs someone there incase she chokes. I hope these parents are not for real.

NO way!!! That's how old my son was. the doctor recommended it!tell her parents to get her the Avent soft spouts, not the Nuby brand. The Avent ones let out just as much milk as a bottle. they cost like 4 bucks each but I highly recommend them:) It took my son only a day to adjust to them.I worked in day-cares for 4 years before having children and have seen 10 month old baby's with bottle rot! just from formula!

oh yes, I fully agree with you. I dont mean to be rude but I wonder why some people go ahead and have children when they have so little time to give...I wonder whether they are a bit jealous and want to weaken the bond between an outsider (you) and their child.

Yes, I think that it is. I have a friend who took her baby off the bottle at 9 months, and when she did he began sucking his fingers. Now he is almost 3 and still sucks them. They need that contact and the sucking.
