Calla Lily care?

It's time for your calla to go dormant. Simply let it dry off, remove the bulb from the soil, and store it someplace dry. A paper bag in a closet is fine. It could be divided at this time also if you notice you have several attached to each other.

Repot it in spring (probably around late March for you), soak the pot very well, then not much until you see the new growth starting. Then place it in a very sunny spot, and fertilize it every couple weeks. It should do just fine for you.

If you want to keep callas growing year round, there are a few that do not have to go dormant, though you have that option.

The large white calla (zantedeschia aethiopica) is readily available from many growers on the net. It's a water hog that produces large flowers than your yellow one.

Even bigger, are the Z. "spotted giant" and Z. "Hercules". They're expensive because they're still rather rare, but I'm hoping they're worth it. I bought 4 of them this summer, and it will probably be a year before they're blooming size, but that's how us gardners are.:-)

Dont worry, the dying of the flowers is a natural part of the cycle. You may even get some flowers during the winter, it is possible. Growing them indoors just be careful not to over water them.

Calla lilies are bulbs that go dormant in cooler weather. When the foliage dies back, remove the bulbs from the pot, clean the soil off them and store in a paper bag with dry peat moss. Replant in the spring after the weather has warmed up. Use new soil, which should be loose and quick draining.

These plants are dormant during the winter months and do not bloom. with moderate water and good light they will bloom again in the late spring.
