Seeing a Nipple?

After reading responses in regard to the woman who was kicked off a plane for breastfeeding I just have to ask this question. Many of you said that public nudity is illegal. Or you said you don't want to see a nipple.

When a woman breastfeeds her child you cannot see a nipple!! Why? Because it is in the baby's mouth. The most you see of a woman's breast when she is nursing is part of the top or maybe part of the bottom, depending on what type of top she is wearing. I've seen less skin on a breastfeeding mom than I've seen on women wearing low cut tops with push-up bras. Should we kick any woman wearing a low cut top off a plane because it is considered public nudity to reveal the top portion of her breasts?

I made a similar comment to my husband the other day when I was reading a baby magazine. A lot of people were writing into the magazine and complaining because the front cover was a woman breast feeding her baby. You couldnt see anything though. But people were just disgusted when they got it in the mail and were calling it Porn, and telling the magazine editor shame on her, etc.. I couldnt believe what they were saying. BUt I bet its ok when they get Playboy Or Maxim in their mailboxes.

So long as a woman is discrete, breastfeeding should never be a problem. Some women, though, are more "in your face" about what they are doing, and that attitude, coupled with a bare breast appearing, may have been enough to cause the incident that you described. You don't get kicked off a plane for breastfeeding unless something else was going on.

I breast feed both my kids on the plane, and I did my best to be discrete but that is what my breasts are for and nothing else! That doesn't mean one should not be polite and cover up but I should not feel like I have to hide in a corner when I feed my baby the one milk manufactured specifically for him.

I feel that it is almost as if Americans feel more comfortable with the breast as a sex symbol than as a feeding mechanism.

it upsets me that people get upset about a woman breastfeeding. i think its just a problem in which people can't see her freakin nipple is what freaks people out....like some sort of surprise nipple or something. but the fact that people walk around 50-90% naked on a daily basis doesn't leave much to the imagination...so a breastfeeding momma makes people want to stare and people think it gross but its natural...but other folks have all their stuff hanging out and noone says a thing....its a shame...

I don't have kids and don't plan to, but I'm not at all offended by seeing a woman breastfeeding. I'd much rather see that than hear a poor hungry baby's cries!

I just think we have more important things to worry about nowadays, ya know? If somebody doesn't like it, they can look away!

The woman was not kicked off for breast feeding, but for failing to do so discreetly even when offered a blanket and then getting an attitude.

I'm all for obnoxious people getting thrown off planes. Makes for a more peaceful ride.

people insist on breastfeeding, but it does come with package. People are asses and they just need to turn away, but some women don't even know if their breasts are shown they are busy feeding their child

No, I have seen plenty of women pull the baby away many times and just let their breast lie there in the open for at least 2 minutes.

As a woman who breastfed for 7 months... I never breastfed in public. I would always go somewhere private for my sake, my babies, and for the comfort of others around.

Women should have some sort of decency... if they have to feed in public that is totally fine.. but cover it up. It is manners in any sort of the way.

THANK YOU!!!! I get so sick and tired of the stupid arguements that make no sense because the same people that claim to be "so offended" never seem to say much about the amount of skin they see on an average day - whether it be via tv, billboards, whatever.

Well said, Amelia. I think this whole issue is just ridiculous. People have nipples. Ok? And babies actually do need to eat. So what is the big deal?
