I have a Solaris 9 server which has ftp installed as binary not the default ascci, how do I switch it?

I want to switch the default setting. Not just declare the type as ascci in all of my scripts. I have two servers the fail over is set to the default ftp setting of ascci not binary. I do not want a ftp conflict upon failover. Reloading the OS is not an option.

You wouldn't have any problems on failover, because all it would do is once again set the type. It wouldn't crash the script or anything just because you declaired the type that you were already running.

As for GUI based FTP clients, almost all softwares explicitly sets the type before downloading. THese clients also check the file extension and has a list of extensions paired with the data type.

If you can name the FTP server or its maker then maybe we can help you.

FTP configurations differs for each vendor. And usually, proprietary.

You may need to go to support page of Sun Microsystems or join their forums to solve your problem.
