What is the proper pronunciation for this name: Nguyen?

I mean no offense, I am just curious- this is a common Vietnamese last name, correct? I was just curious, because I have seen the name many times before...but I didn't know how to properly pronounce it. Thank you.

I asked someone with this name and I was told "win" (no G sound), but since several people here are including it, it may be a regional thing where in some places they pronounce the G. Just as in English "often" is pronounced both with and without the T sound.

I see that some people are including the initial N as well - even more variations.

The pronunciation in English is roughly 'nuhwen' and is pronounced as one syllable. See: http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/Nguyen to hear it pronounced.

To hear the name pronounced in Vietnamese see the following link:

There was a Vietnamese girl in our class with that last name, and she liked it to be pronounced: "NWayne", like wayne, but with a half silent N at the front.

However, one of my exes who was half Chinese half Vietnamese had Nguyen as a middle name, and it was pronounced "yeen" by the Chinese parents.

You're right, this is a Vietnamese name and it's very common. I used to work with a Vietnamese guy who was named like this and I remember that is pronounced like "nwen", very simple right!?

    Hope this answered your question.

Wieng sounds sort of like wing. When people ask me I just say win because if I tell them the correct pronunciation they make me say it over and over again each time more loud and slow than the time before. It's quite annoying.
