For example, you may need a root canal if you have a cavity and have lost the filling. That will cause the nerve to go bad and infection to develop inside your tooth. In some cases, you'll see discoloration of the tooth.

I won't tell you it doesn't hurt. You'll feel it, though it won't be a terrible pain. The numbing injection is kind of painful, but once it kicks in you shouldn't feel much pain. It is very uncomfortable because the dentist has tools inside your mouth and basically he's pulling and scraping out the inside of your tooth. Once everything's been removed they place a temporary filling and antibiotic medication. In my case, I felt better instantly. I didn't need pain medication as they pain from the cavity/infection was worst than the root canal itself.

I went back a week later, the dentist removed the temporary filling and the medication, then filled the root canal. Once that is filled, they recomend you get a crown (fake tooth) to cover it. And presto!

Source(s): I had one done recently and still need one more. I know it sounds scary (trust me, I put mine off for YEARS just out of fear) but the relief is instantly. I would do it all over again without numbing medicine, just to get rid of the terrible toothache I had. As soon as I get some extra cash, I'm going in for my second canal.

if you need a root canal you will probably have a very sore tooth .. the pain might stop .. then come back even worse. because the pulp (live part of the tooth) has died.

a root canal is the long root of the tooth that goes inside the gum/jaw inside the root canal is the ''nerve'' the live part of the tooth which is called the pulp when this becomes inflamed adn or dies root canal treatment (RCT) is needed.

this is done by opening up the tooth (anaesthetic is used if you dont like the pain of the injection ask for some topical to go on the gum as this should help stop it from hurting a little)

a broach or reamer ( a very small file) is then insertet in the canal and and carefully umm twirlled and the pulp (nerve) should come out on the file. a pretend plastic nerve is then put in for around 2 weeks this is called a gutta perca point, then you should have a temporary medicated dressing an filling placed in the tooth and 2 weeks later the dressing is removed anda permanent one put in providing all the nerve got taken out.

hope this helps.. if its a good dentist then you will feel no pain.

A root canal treatment is "basically" the act of taking out the contents from the center of the root, all the way to the tippy end, and then sealing the hollow space with a filling material. Many people say that they "had the root removed" from a tooth, but root canal treatment treats the CANAL in the center of the tooth.

Usually, it is required when the tissue inside the center of the tooth (ie: in the root canal) is diseased or dead. This is usually the result of an infection caused by tooth decay that has gone "all the way to the nerve." The idea here is to eliminate the infection by removing the tissue. The next goal is to smooth out the inside of the canal(s) so that a filling material can pass freely to the end of the tooth to seal it off. Once it is sealed off, it is no longer a source of infection to your body. Your natural immune system will continue to fight off any infection that may have entered the bone and eventually your body will heal. Some people need antibiotics to help in this fight, but they are not always necessary.

Any pain after the procedure is NOT from inside the tooth. It is from the swelling and infection in the bone at the end of the tooth. Taking the nerve out (or what remains of the nerve) is just done so that we can seal the end of the tooth so that the body can heal the damage in the bone. This takes a while. Root canal treatment is not a magic wand that instantly makes you feel better. It is just the first step in what will then allow your body to heal. The healing can take a while, especially if you had a good sized abscess on the tooth.

In back teeth, it is generally recommended to have a crown placed over the tooth to protect it from breaking, as teeth that have had root canal treatment tend to dry out somewhat and become more brittle and susceptible to breaking. Front teeth are often strong enough to go without a crown, but sometimes they need a crown, too.

Yeah, it can hurt, maybe 1 out of 10 times. That 1 guy where it hurts probably waited until the tooth was already really killing him before he went for treatment. I tell my patients that root canal treatments are like teenagers. 9 out of 10 are no problem at all, but you always hear about the bad ones.

The Gumhelper person ahead of me knows what she is talking about. Only a dentist would know if you need a root canal. Don't let all the people scare you about the pain, geez, I've had 4 root canal's done and it no big deal. Least ways if you have a good dentist. My tooth hurt a whole lot more before I had the root canal done then it did during the process.

You dentist is the only one who can tell you if you need root canal. A root canal is usually done in order to save a tooth, as an alternative to having it pulled. They drill inside your tooth and take out the roots, and then put in a filling and put a cap on top of the tooth. If done properly, it should not be painful.

    HI,

A GOOD INDICATION THAT YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE DONE IS WHEN YOUR TOOTH HURTS FROM ANYTHING HOT OR WARM AND YOU CANT CHEW ON AND IT HAS ABSCESSED. A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE IS WHEN THE DENTIST FILES OUT THE TINY NERVES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOTS OF THE TOOTH AND THEN FILLS IT BACK UP WITH A DENTAL RUBBER MATERIAL. AFTER YOU ARE NUMB, IT DOES NOT HURT. IT ONLY HURTS WHEN YOU WAIT TOO LONG TO HAVE IT DONE AND ITS REALLY, REALLY INFECTED. SO IF YOUR DENTIST TELLS YOU THAT YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL, GET IT DONE ASAP! GOOD LUCK

go read the FAQs at www.ada.org

    specifically:

    http://ada.org/public/topics/root_canal.asp

if your tooth is hurting spontaneously and waking you at night, it may need a root canal; i cna't tell w/o seeing it and an xray.

the root canal may hurt slightly, but usually once you're numb you don't feel anything.
