Nurses, Doctors, Med Students, I need your help. Others are welcome too.?
I was diagnosed with a DVT (blood clot in my leg) because of trauma to my leg. (I was on OrthroCylin for 5 years up to the accident, with no problems.) Because of the blood clot, I was taken off birth control and told to consult with an OBGYN. Which I did. We found that depo-provera was the best option. I've been on it for a little over 3 months, with no noticable side effects.
Anyway my question is, can I go back to the pill once the blood clot is gone and I'm taken off the blood thinners? I've had no problems with depo, but kind of perfer the pill over the shot. I just want to know if I will ever be able to go back to the pill, or if I'm stuck on the shot from now on because of one fluke blood clot.

The pill was stopped more for legal than medical reasons and I do not hesitate to restart the pill after the DVT is resolved. I always ask myself if the presence of a DVT is reason to stop the pill at all but the little attorney in my head makes me do it. Do not expect your OBGYN to agree with me - after all - they have the liability in this instance. I do not believe that the medical literature supports cause and effect between the pill and DVT - and in fact - I think that DVT is less likely in pill users. Nonetheless - the decision must be made individually by the prescribing doctor.

I had a blood clot from ortho as well. They also put me on Depo, I had an awful experience with Depo, but my doctors have not and will not allow me to go back on Ortho. I think the best thing to do would be consult your doctor, because my blood clot was not caused by trauma, they believe it to be directly related to the pill. So in your case you may be able to, but just know your chances of having another clot are still there!!
Good luck!!
