How do you find out if someone has spent time in the Brig?

A sailor was "stationed" at Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar some years ago, but the sailor has a criminal conviction that leads me to believe the sailor was actually imprisoned. What's the easiest way to verify whether or not the sailor was imprisoned in the brig? The sailor may be a pathological liar, so it is useless to ask directly. Can records be obtained?

You may be able to obtain the information with a Freedom of Information request to the Veterans' Affairs.

Brig time is typically considered a federal crime and should show up on their record, but NJP could result in very short times (3 or 5 days) without it being listed.

On his DD-214 it would be listed as so many days of bad time if he was an inmate.
