I work for your friendly local health department. For those of you who care to know my credentials, I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist. I have a masters degree in public health from USC (Trojans, not Gamecocks). I also have a BA in molecular cell biology and Southeast Asian studies from UC Berkeley (GO BEARS!). My specialties are STDs, coccidiodomycosis, foodborne illnesses, mycology, health professional school admissions, and stuff about Los Angeles, Berkeley and the Bay Area. Check out my Q's list and help break some ties. Click "In Voting" and cast your vote. Thanks!

  • Where in SoCal should I go for a weekend in late June?

I'm entertaining suggestions for places to visit for a quiet weekend with someone I'm "trying to get to know" (if you catch my drift). Here are the caveats:

    1. Please keep hotel costs under $150 per night.

    2. Please keep it within 2½ hours driving from LA.

    3. I'm NOT outdoorsy, so please don't suggest camping.

Please elaborate on your reasons. Just telling me to go to San Diego isn't enough. WHY should I go? And WHAT should I see?

  • Which of these words rhymes with the "Gough" in Gough Street?

    Enough

    Through

    Bough

    Dough

    Cough

Seriously, I have no idea, and I lived in the Bay Area for 5 years. Will pick best answer based on thumbs, so please thumb honestly and generously.

  • Where should I visit in Bangkok and Northern Thailand (see details)?

I'm visiting Thailand in late January, early February. I've done the usual stuff: temples, Grand Palace, floating markets, night bazaars and beaches. I'm looking for something new, some places to party. I'll be in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai. I'm in my mid-20's, traveling with friends and family.

I'm also bilingual, so I can go most places easily and unfettered.

Thanks for any tips you've got.

And please pardon the poor grammar. I am a silly American trying to stay in touch with "my culture."

  • Does WinXP Pro require activation? Or is it only WinXP Home that needs activation?

My laptop was stolen, and I took its WinXP Home install CD and used it to repair an old PC (gotta cut my losses somehow). Now it wants an activation key and won't recognize the one that came with it (probably because I'm installing it on a different machine).

I have an XP Pro disk from a previous laptop (also stolen), and I want to know if it requires an activation key as well. Does year matter? The XP home disk is from 2007 (I only had that laptop for 2 months!), the XP Pro disk is from 2004.

If none of these works, I'm going to format the machine and start over with Win2k (uhh, can I go backwards like that?).

Seriously, I've been robbed twice in the span of 3 months, won't Dell and Microsoft have a little mercy on me so I can have a functional home computer???

  • Will Y!A do anything to stop HIV-denialist trolls?

The STD and Infectious Disease answer boards are being trolled by a team of HIV denialists who go into any question about HIV and post responses denouncing HIV as the cause of AIDS. They tell users that condoms are TOXIC, and that AIDS isn't caused by viruses, much less contracted by unsafe sexual practices or injection drug use.

I am in favor of differing opinions, but in this case, the disinformation spread by these people can potentially KILL people. As a private enterprise, I think Yahoo! should do something to prevent this dangerous and misleading content from being spread.

So, are you, as users of the Health Answers board, fed up? And will Y!A do something about the problem?

Lastly, notable trolls include: PaulKing, Vivian K and anyone else who posts links to virusmyth.

  • Can you give five nice, sensible suggestions for a girl's name?

I'm not having a baby, nor will I be having one in the next decade. I just lurk in this forum, and frankly, I'm appalled by the idiotic names you mommies-to-be (and mommy-wannabes) pick for your kids. I hope this list at least prevents one child from being saddled with a stupid name. Here are the rules:

    1. No more than 5 girls' names.

    2. No links to baby sites unless you pick and list 5 names first. Sites as citation are okay.

    3. Suggest names that are a little old fashioned, slightly obscure, but nice and sensible.

    4. But don't go all Celtic or Victorian. Examples: Alison? yea. Hazel? nay. Ceindrych? ZOMGWTFBBQ?!?

Ladies (and the few gentlemen who might see this), giving your kid a stupid name borders on child abuse. Prevent parental cruelty. Let's bring back some good ol' names and inspire (or knock some sense into) some parents-to-be.

  • Should people clearly displaying signs of eating disorders be excluded from asking about weight loss on Y!A?

I love fitness, and I love Y!A, but I hate finding piles and piles of posts from anorexic, bulimic, and other eating disordered individuals seeking (unhealthy) weight loss advice on the Diet & Fitness board.

While it is not technically against Y!A guidelines (yet), do you believe that these posts should be removed by moderators to prevent people from engaging in potentially lethal behavior?

Or is it a free speech issue, and that people should be allowed to self-harm as they please, and that the Internet community should be allowed to aid and abet this kind of behavior?

  • Should you still address a person as "Doctor" if they are not a licensed physician in your region?

Suppose a person has completed medical training, tested proficiently in their home country and performed all the other tasks necessary to earn the qualification of Doctor. But the person emigrates to a country where they have not passed the local licensing exam (language barriers and so forth). Should you still address this person as Doctor?

Another example: Qualified physicians are leaving the Philippines at high rates and coming to the US to take the NCLEX. They stay in the US and work as nurses. They have proper medical training and degrees. Should they also be addressed as Doctor So-and-so?

On the other hand, people are conferred doctoral degrees by universities of questionable repute. Should they be addressed as Doctor So-and-so?

What are your thoughts on the etiquette and use of the title "Doctor?"

  • How do you find out if someone has spent time in the Brig?

A sailor was "stationed" at Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar some years ago, but the sailor has a criminal conviction that leads me to believe the sailor was actually imprisoned. What's the easiest way to verify whether or not the sailor was imprisoned in the brig? The sailor may be a pathological liar, so it is useless to ask directly. Can records be obtained?

  • Is there a way to quickly delete all songs from an iPod shuffle?

I have the 512MB iPod Shuffle. At the time, it was all I could afford, but it has served me very well. It's time to change up my music selections, but AFAIK, it have to do it very slowly via iTunes. Is there some option to "Delete All" on my iPod so I can upload new tracks?

  • Where can I find really great souffles (savory and sweet)?

Convenient places for me in descending order:

    Pasadena

    San Gabriel Valley

    East LA

    Downtown LA

    Hollywood

    Inland Empire

    North OC

    West LA

    Beverly Hills

(sorry, but I have an aversion to the Westside, which I will only overlook as a last resort, or if you promise me a really fantastic souffle).

  • Out of the Level 6+ users, who has the highest Best Answer to Other Answer ratio?

Anybody can flood Yahoo!Answers and post thousands of replies. But of the Level 6+, who has the largest proportion of BEST answers to other answers. Think of it as a Best Answer batting average.

While we're at it, who's got the sheer greatest number of Best Answers?

  • Where can I find red velvet cake and sweet potato-pecan pie around LA?

I found red velvet cake at Fred 62 in Los Feliz. But where can I find more? I have not yet successfully found sweet potato-pecan pie. House of Pies only has pecan. I am looking for the hybrid. I am near Pasadena, but I am willnig to travel modest distances for baked goods.

  • If you win "Best Answer", but the asker deletes the question, do you lose those points?

I didn't think this would be an issue, but I answered a question, and I really put in a good, thoughtful answer. Other people were answering just to tell me I gave a good answer. I was proud of it. Then the asker DELETED the question :( Do I lose my 12 (10 for Best Answer, 2 for answering)?

  • How much light do guppies need or prefer?

I keep my guppies in the kitchen, but it's dark in there. They don't show any problems from being kept in the dark all day, but they really perk up when I come home and turn the lights on. A lot of fish don't do well with direct light, but should I leave the lights on while I'm at work? I'd prefer not to waste electricity, but if it keeps my guppies happy... Your thoughts, please.
