How should Sen-elect Webb have answered Pres. Bush?

The setup:

At a dinner/photo op with newly elected Congresspeople, Bush asked Webb how his son (a soldier in Iraq) was doing.

Webb answered he would like to see his son home.

Bush retorted "I didn't ask you that, I asked how your son was."

Right-wing spin-meisters are accusing Webb of being "disrespectful."

How should Webb have answered?

The missing line was "That's between me and my son."

I think he answered properly. Bush was being nosy by asking Webb how his son was; he should have known that Webb does not talk about his son in public. Webb got the message across to Bush that he needs to resolve this war in Iraq.

As far as being "disrespectful" is concerned, that's in the eyes of the beholder. In my opinion, "disrespectful" is going to war with a sovereign nation and causing US and host nation deaths for reasons that turn out to be untruthful. There are no WMDs in Iraq. There is little chance of establishing a democracy in Iraq; besides, why Iraq? Why not Sudan or one of about a half dozen other nations?

To me Webb shows up as a person who gets his point across.

As he did. Bush was trying to co-opt Webb with small talk. Webb is very intelligent and knows how to work with people. The republicans are gunning for him because he won an important race, and knows how to defeat the shrill, illogical, emotion based talking points of republicans.

Considering Webb was given the opportunity to express his beliefs to our Commander-in-Chief, he could have tactfully answered by telling the truth about his son. He then could have proceeded to ask about the possibility of a pull-out timeline, etc.

Webb is an idiot though. He campaigned with such pride about his son serving in the military. Makes me wonder how many people voted for him because his son's military duty was an example of a brave privileged, rich kid whose father must be a real stand up kind of guy.

Ironic isn't it? See a question here about the draft and a lot of the answers address how awful it is that wealthy politicians kids never go. And then mention a wealthy politician who wants to pull his kid out of the war and the same group gets bent out of shape that the guy can't pull his kid out of the war. Can't have it both ways no matter WHO you are, liberal or conservative. Make a choice.

Answer: Answer the question that was asked, in the spirit in which it was asked.

Pretty much the behavior you'd expect from a Democrat author of lewd books.

"Bring 'em all home, not just my son."
