Ladies and their little dogs?

Why do more and more women have such an emotional attachment to little dogs that go everywhere with them? Seems I am seeing more women, particularly retirement or pre-retirement age that seem lost without their little dogs. Not that it's bad, just wondering if there is a reason for it other than profound loneliness. I have noticed that these women tend to isolate themselves, preferring the company of their dogs over people. Is that healthy?

I know there are a lot of magnets and buttons that say "The more people I meet, the better I like my dog" but is it a sign of a medical condition or mental anguish that is going untreated?

My dog doesn't argue, talk back, fight with me..slam doors when he's mad..loves me all the time..He's compassionate..He loves me unconditionally. He makes me feel better when I am sick or down.. He cuddles up beside me and loves me. He doesn't flip me off or curse at me...He TREATS me better than any human I have ever met. He doesn't say I hate you or by me this or that..He's only happy that I am here and that he can be with me...I use to want kids and a husband but hey...dogs are wonderful..the best things on earth...(p.s) they don't leave the toilet seat up

I too like my dogs more than most people. But I also have healthy relationships with friends and family so I am not by any means lonely. I believe that although our children grow up and move out we still feel the need to nurture and instead of having more children - ugh! at my age I have five dogs - 3 little ones and 2 border collies that I wouldn't trade for anything. Love them like children.
