Homocysteine is an amino acid naturally found in human beings. In recent years, there has been evidence that elevated homocysteine levels may be correlated with increased risk of heart disease. Whether it is the direct of effect of homocysteine to the body or some other cause that both increases homocysteine and independently causes heart disease is unknown.

Some studies have found that increased intake of folic acid may reduce the homocysteine levels in the blood and also help reduce the risk of heart disease, again by an unknown mechanism.

However, don't go and start taking lots of folic acid if you don't need to. Other studies have shown that intake of excessive amounts of folic acid in patients without homocysteine elevation do not have any benefit and may actual cause more harm.
