A wireless network card is simply a circuit board that provides wireless capability to a desktop computer. They plug into a PCI slot inside the computer, and generally have a small antenna that protrudes from the back of the case. It is used to "talk" to a wireless router or other wireless access point. Alternatively, you can purchase a wireless interface device that connects to a USB port; they look a bit like a thumb drive, and you don't have to open the case to install it. You can also move it from your desktop to your laptop or to another computer if you need to.
