If Limewire isn't legal, then what is??
I was under the impression that downloading music from Limewire was perfectly legal. A cheap solution to iTunes.
One of my friends was telling me that downloading music from them was basically the same as piracy, even though you pay a monthly subscription. I'm all about downloading music for cheap, but I don't want to end up getting in serious trouble for it.
For someone like me who may only download 5-10 songs per month, $20 for Napster hardly seems worth it. Do any of you have any thoughts on this? What's the real scoop..is Limewire illegal??
If so, what is a cheap LEGAL alternative??
Thanks!

Peer to Peer sharing of files is actually legal. There is nothing wrong, legally, with sharing files that are original, that you have made or created, or own the copyright to the material you are wanting to share. I have a presentation that I created in Flash that I have a legal right to share with anyone i wish. If I were to share out a movie that I bought on DVD, then that is illegal. I have no right to share anything I have bought from a store or downloaded, unless I get documentation that specifically allows me to share that file, music, software, movie, etc.
At no point is LimeWire illegal, it is perfectly legal for peer-to-peer sharing(P2P). When people start sharing files or music that they do not own the copyrights to, or if they are not the owner or originator of those files or music, then the ACT of sharing the files is illegal. The software remains totally legal. It's the use of, and the not software itself, that becomes illegal.
Thus, Napster, because of the payment involved in the subscription, is perfectly legal. There are two parts to this, first you are paying for the limited rights to download and install those songs onto a device. At no time are they giving you the right to "share" those files.

Yes the use of limewire to download music or anything without the permission of the parties involved in the creation of the stuff is illegal in the US atleast. Other places in the world it is not but the RIAA can still take people to civil court in most of those places. I use napster togo and ruckus myself, I don't care for ruckus that much though. Ruckus is free for some students in college as part of there tuition pays for it I believe. I know that it is free for me at Texas A&M.

Nothing is legal that says you can download shared files. Sharing files is illegal, even if the company charges for it. The only places that are legal is for example: Yahoo! Musicchoice, if you have a WMA or PlayForSure device, you can download as much music to your devices for a monthly charge. The reason that is legal is you have temporary rights to that music, but you can't take them off your device and do as you wish with them. Hope that helps.
