Have the fan blow the air up slowly. This will push the warm air at the ceiling over to the walls and down, without making it drafty.

Only with high ceilings do you want the air to come straight down. With normal height ceilings, pushing the air down directly towards you will actually make you feel cooler. Now go try both ways.

if you ask an Engineer he will say so the air is blowing down because heat rises to the ceiling. I say it is personal preference. If you want the warm air blowing down on you that is fine. Otherwise blow it up so the cooler air blows on the ceiling forcing the warmer air to blow down on the walls. Either way you are circulating the warm and cold air.

it should turn so the air blws down... hot air rises and you want that warm air back down where you can feel it.
