What can I expect from a CT scan?

I'm having my first CT scan in a few weeks. They told me to not eat anything for 4 hours before it, but besides that they didn't tell me anything else about it. What happens to me in a CT scan and should I do anything else for it?

And do I get to keep the pictures? ;)

Update:

Since they inject me with iodine is that why I can't eat beforehand? Does the iodine do anything besides give a better contrast?

Well since I have a CT scan every 6 months, here goes. They will probably inject you with an iodine based dye thru an IV, so they have a proper contrast for the pictures. The dye will make you feel warm all over. It can give you a sensation like you wet yourself. ( No I am not kidding) They will probably tell you to take a deep breath and hold it and then tell you when you can release it. The motion of breathing messes up the pictures. You have to lie still, and its usually over fairly quick. Call the hospital or lab where the CT is going to be performed and they should more than willing to answer any questions for you, too. Also I hope you have no allergy's to iodine like I do. I have to take steroids a day before and a few hours before to prepare my body for the dye. Good luck. Here is a link that might help.

Basically, you just lie on a table for a few minutes that's sitting inside or a giant ring. The giant ring has a little camera-type-thing that basically takes x-rays of your body that look like a slice.

Just be ready to sit still for a while, and don't wear metal things the day you go in. You'll just have to take them off.

You generally lie on a table and cannot move for a while as a machine takes pictures of you like slices of your body. The pictures are used for the doctor to see everything inside what they are looking at. You do not generally ever see the pictures and do not get to keep them. As you, through your insurance, pay for them, you can make them give them to you when they are finished with them.

it is loud. you lie there and take deep breaths and hold them when you are told. it is painless. just relax and smile. i have had many. all you need is patience. normally you can see the pics if you ask. i had mine for a bit it was interesting to look at.

don't worry. and no you don't need to do anything else for it.

No your doctor will get the report and the pictures will be kept in your file for future comparisons.
