Rats and their dang water bottles....?

why does water bottles leak when they are about halfway full? i keep having problem with my males water bottle. i've changed 2 out because they pretty much wet the whole cage. why do these things don't seem to leak when you first put them in their, but leave a nice wet spot for you to clean up? it's annoying. is there anything i can put under it, like paper, litter, or something? help me please.....

I had the same problem with my rats water bottles...

After you fill it, and put the top on it, turn it so the "dropper thing" is at the bottom (like you're gonna hang it up) and give it a squeeze. This will FORCE the bottle to vaccume and it SHOULD solve the problem. If not, then I suggest a new bottle...again. Buy a GOOD one...not at Wal-Mart or something...I've been through about 4 of them.

ALSO, here's a cool trick....since you have male rats, and they like to mark their cageand smell it up with MAN SMELL....put a little vanilla extract (1/4 tsp.) in thier water....it cuts the smell.....it REALLY works!! And they LOVE the taste.

    Hope this helps,

I think it's a vacuum problem. I have the same problem with my guinea pig bottle. After filling, a few drops will fall until a vacuum forms, but should be fine after that. It does however drip drip drip on occasion, and I just refill it when it does, create a new vacuum. It's just one of those little things we have to deal with, with our pets.
